You are right, it is ridiculously expensive- I didn't know that it was so much cheaper just a few years ago. It sounds like Max is just getting a little carried away with the price.

I guess a better idea, other than the Gumball, would be to get a group of like-minded people to join in a coast-to-coast rally, independently. It would certainly be a lot cheaper that way.

Mike,

Not to burst your bubble but spending $55K for 7-8 days of parties with folks you don't even know is nuts unless you've got all the cash in the world to burn. Don't get me wrong..I love the GB3K, have met Max and befriended him in order to take part when it first came back to the USA in 2002 (from NYC to LA). But it was pretty reasonable back then to enter (~$15K). And now the entry price would buy you a very nice track day car.

While I savour the 2002 run I did (particularly visiting the Playboy mansion finish), its just gotten way over price. Kudos to Max for building his business but not on my dime,

My recommendation is to take a vacation to visit the starting points, see all the eye candy and maybe pace the cars from one point to another.

Cheers Eric :)

True, most people treat it as a race. I'm sure there are a number of people who want to be the first to finish. I personally would be overjoyed just to be in it.

Taxes: write off a Porsche 911 GT3 ($106,000) as a business expense.

Hey Mike, glad to see you share the same enthusiasm for the Gumball 3000 as most of us here at CarZi do. As much as it is labeled a RALLY, it definitely becomes a race at heart between checkpoints and rivalries are created between certain cars/drivers who have money and bets on the line. I'm sure I can find some column on my tax return to write off the $55,000 entrance fee for 'business travel'.

Great minds think alike. I just started my series on the Gumball on my blog yesterday (april 2nd). I have most of the month lined up for everything that I can think of related to the Gumball.

I can't wait until the Gumball comes to the United States so I can see it in person. One of my dreams is to participate in the rally.

If you want to participate, you need money. It's £28,000 (about US$55,000) just to enter, not including the car.

FYI: "It's not a race. It's a rally"
