Rumors: Porsche 928 Successor Under Development

Porsche is developing a successor to the 928 coupe alongside its four-door Panamera, according to a new report. Germany’s Auto Zeitung says development is underway on the new grand tourer, which should arrive not long after its four-door sibling.

The Panamera, a coupe-like sedan reminiscent of the Mercedes CLS-Class or Aston Martin Rapide, is expected to launch in 2008 as a 2009 model. It will feature a front-engine layout with V8 power.

The original Porsche 928 built between 1977 and 1995 featured a similar setup to the Panamera, with a large V8 in front of the driver and power to the rear wheels. Building a two-door version of the Panamera as a replacement to the 928 seems logical, then.

While there is still no concrete evidence of 928 prototypes, several months ago spies at Porsche’s test center in Germany reported seeing a prototype vehicle wearing a 1995 Porsche 928 body, but with heavy modification and a pile of measurement equipment inside. The car appeared to be a testbed for a new platform, with a wider stance than the old 928.

In early 2006, Road and Track said Porsche planned to revive the 928 with a 2010 model based on the Panamera. 18 months later, the rumors continue to circulate, with no denial from Porsche officials.

Brad Pitt Arrives In The BMW Hydrogen 7

Actor Brad Pitt arrived in a BMW Hydrogen 7 to the Warner Bros. premiere of the film “Ocean’s 13” at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre yesterday in Hollywood, California.

The Hydrogen 7 is a production-ready prototype unveiled by BMW last year. Unlike many hydrogen-powered cars, the H7 does not use fuel cells and electric motors, but instead burns hydrogen in a typical internal combustion fashion.

BMW has apparently come through on its promise of building a limited number of Hydrogen 7s for use by celebrities and government officials.

The cruising range in the hydrogen mode is more than 125 miles, with another 300 miles in the gasoline mode. If there was no gasoline storage, hydrogen mode range could be significantly greater.

Although the H7 could be produced in a few years, the lack of a hydrogen infrastructure means most people probably won’t get their hands on one for quite some time.

What does Alex Tagliani drive on the Street?

Alex Tagliani poses in Las Vegas in front of his Mercedes CLS
It is always particularly interesting to see what race car drivers drive when off the track. CART racer Alex Tagliani and his super hot model wife Bronte Tagliani have two cars – a Lincoln Navigator and a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS sedan. The silver CLS is kitted out with Brabus rims, wheels and suspension.

The Globe and Mail article also talks about his first car (VW Golf GTi), his next car (Maserati Quattroporte) and his reasons for not driving something more racecar driver worthy (Porsche 911 GT3) The reporter however fails to mention whether it’s a CLS 550 or a CLS 55 – Quite the oversight if you ask me! You cannot even tell from the single picture of the CLS as he is standing right in front of where the AMG fender logo would be.

BMW’s X5 has a new flagship model – the tough-looking 4.8i M Sport. The £53,440 SUV gets a not-so-subtle Motorsport upgrade including an M Sport body kit and steering wheel, lightweight 19-inch alloys, uprated suspension, ou-la-la leather-wrapped sports seats, high-gloss roof rails and matte aluminum exterior trim. Bigger 20-inch alloys are a further option as is bamboo and poplar internal trim. Talk about saving the environment!
