First Test Drive: Nissan GT-R Video 0-60mph in 3.3 Seconds!

Holy shit, this is by far the sickest test drive video of 2008, many thanks to the owner in Japan who let Edmunds.com test drive his car on the AMI Airstrip in TOKYO!
The car in the video is a Japanese-spec example with 1,500 break-in kilometers. It’s owned by Japanese journalist Jun Nishikawa and packs the same hardware the U.S. car will get: a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that generates at least 473 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. It had the same six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox and the same adjustable dampers.

The $70,000 USD 2009 Nissan GT-R is faster than the following speeding BULLETS
Dodge Viper
Corvette Z06
Porsche 911 Turbo
GT-R Launch Control - 8th Wonder of the World
Nissan Claims the 2009 GT-R does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.
However activating Nissan’s technologically advanced, state of the art LAUNCH CONTROL can get this down to less than 3.3 SECONDS. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-DICULOUS!!!!!!!!!! To activate LAUNCH CONTROL you must switch the Transmission and Damping and VBC settings to R (which stands for RACE or REDICULOUS). Once it is activated, the driver can pin the BRAKE and throttle down while the computer magically prepares for LAUNCH @ 4500rpm. Sounds as fun as I would imagine preparing the Millennium Falcon to enter lightspeed!

According to Edmunds the “acceleration is crushing and like no other production car they have ever tested”.
Braking
It requires 15-inch rotors, six-piston Brembo calipers and sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE070R rubber to bring a 3,836-pound GT-R to rest from 60 mph in only 104 feet. That’s only 1 foot longer than the Porsche 911 Turbo equipped with the $8,800 ceramic composite brake package. It’s also the same stopping distance as the last Dodge Viper they tested and 2 feet shorter than the Corvette Z06.
How does the twin-turbo Nissan GT-R stack up against the Zonda F V12 ?
Here is video that perfectly synchronizes both cars going around the Nurburing.

Excellent review. The GTR may just be replacing the 911 at the top of my wish list!
I’d like to do a comparison of it and a 911 the RaceDV way. Kind of like our car vs. bike comparison.

I don’t know if the GT-R can replace my sweet spot for the 911 Turbo as my #1 daily driver car of choice mainly because it’s still a Nissan. Regardless if it can shave a second or two from the 911’s T’s 0-60 or its awesome GT-R/Skyline history its still a Nissan.
If you can round up a Skyline, I’ll round up a 997 Turbo and we can create an awesome video like your car vs bike video!

YOU TALK ABOUT NISSAN AS IF IT WAS HIUNDAI OR ANY OTHER CRAP COMPANY, WHEN IN FACT NISSAN CAN BEAT WITH ALTIMA AND MAXIMAS PASSATS AND VOLKSWAGWN JETTAS AND AS I RECALL THIS IS THE ORIGINAL PORSCHES PARENT COMPANY N IM NOT EVEN GONNA COMPARE INFINITIS VS AUDIS, BELIEVE ME NISSAN HAS A BETTER HISTORY THAN THIS COMPANYS.

cARLOS, its all about brand perception. Don’t get me wrong, I think Nissan makes fantastic products, but in the end the Porsche brand is still more desirable and exotic than Nissan ever can become in the publics perception, regardless how many GT-R successors or exotics cars their future may engineer.

Okay I think I need to educate you on Nissan a little. Since I live in Japan for 15 years I can say that Porsche, Audi and VW is alway a car that Japanese view as great cars. The only problem is that the Japan government charges almost 100% import tax for a foreign car. This makes it pretty hard for Japanese to afford to by them. Unknown to the U.S. Nissan based customers out there, Nissan was in some serious financial problems a few years back. So bad they ask Diamler (Mercedes Benz) to buy a percentage of the company to help them out of a financial bind. But let’s get to the real thing here……Nissan had to buy a Porsche 911 Turbo (Automatic) in order to figure out how to (bottom line) beat it. In Japan a 911 turbo is around $190,000 compared to the $120,000 else where. As for comparing Nissan to Audi’s and VW there is no comparison because here (Japan) the german cars are the icons. Nissan is a coming up in the world but believe me don’t believe the hype because over here I’ve seen Skylines and Porsches go at it on the highway. They are pretty equal but I’m afraid I will have to go for the Porsche because they have a better sports line up. Boxster, Caymen, Carrera, 911 Turbo, GT3, GT2 and Carerra GT. Nissan has the 350z and the Skyline…….if they were going to go after the porsche they should have started with the Boxster S or Caymen S these cars generate the most sales. Last but not least its how deep your pockets are.

don’t lie man. nissan is number 1 in japan and the GTR is the KING, bottom line………..

Nissan definitely isn’t Hyundai - Hyundai doesn’t have a track record of covering up the fact that for YEARS their airbags were blinding people permanently because of poor design.
You’d have to be stupid to buy a supercar designed by a company that covered up those kinds of safety problems.

I agree totally - at the end of the day, the Nissan is still just that, a Nissan. I tend to factor in all the attributes of a manufacturer when I buy a car, and comparing Porsche’s record in terms of both performance and engineering, especially SAFETY, there’s just no comparison.
From what I’ve seen of Nissan, they seem to be the manufacturer of choice for the poor man’s muscle car - they take a lot of HP, cram it into a cheap and shoddy vehicle. I can’t imagine the GTR is going to be all that much better, and god forbid you actually crash one at the track or on the road, nissan occupants don’t tend to fare well in accidents.
There are so many better choices in that price range, that it just doesn’t make any sense to spend that kind of money on a souped-up G35 or whatever it is. Relative to the cost of a 911T or a Z06, you wouldn’t even dent your checkbook putting a little more HP under the hood if you felt that concerned about a GTR being a little faster off the line.

@KingTito. I am going to have to disagree with you.. There are pictures of a pretty badly crashed GTR in Singapore.. And if you look at the pictures of the interior it’s like it’s never been hit.. In other words if you look at the pictures carefully you can clearly see that the body of the GTR is really well built and really safe.

Well said Fadi! It appears that these Porsche fanatics will thumb-suck any kind of nonsense to explain why their glorified VW beetles cost so much and do so little! Personally I would take a Tata Indica over a porsche (NO LIE)!!!

BRAND PERCEPTION, who freekin cares.
Clearly you only care about what other people think which makes you a sheep. You can keep following others in your slow porsche while all the gtr owners will zoom off into the distance.
If only you knew how much this car is going to change the worlds perception.
Oops sorry I forgot, you only know what others know because your a follower.
One question though, what makes everyone else right?
Just becuase people may assume or think one thing, doesn’t necessarilly mean they are correct.
February 29th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Queppa, thanks for your interesting point of view! However the only thing this car is going to change is the level of technology that rival cars manufacturers will have to implement to up the ante. Porsche will answer back as with BMW and the others more luxurious brands of the world in order to keep Nissan in check. The GT-R is an amazing technological wonder (even though its a Glorified Infinity G35), as it was when the R32 GT-R made its debut in 1989 and smoked Holden’s and Ford V8’s in the Australian Bathurst 1000 touring-car race 2 years straight 91/92 which is when it first got its name “Godzilla - Monster from Japan”.
To answer your question about what makes everyone else right, nothing does, not sure where you got that notion but you should re-read my post, perception is nothing that can be quantified by right or wrong as it it a qualitative measure of ones unique understanding of the world around them.
I hope you continue to visit the site and post your views, they are extremely refreshing and I look forward to all your future comments!
Cheers,
aC

comparing a Skyline with a 911 is like comparing a Hiundai with a 350Z…….
October 8th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
so in other words what are you saying that a hyundai can beat a 350z, cause we’ve been killing 911 4 years.
June 7th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Disagree totally ,, the GT-R is $70,000 but the Porsche is more than 140, do you want to double the price to show everyone how wealthy you are!? or you need to buy a car which value for what you are paying for, if I can buy a Porsche turbo for $70,000 I will defiantly think about the brand name, otherwise, GT-R is the right supercar for $70 segment… do you want a 140 thousands dollar car, just wait for the Lexus LF-A : ) arios amigo.. I will pay extra money for a brand name, but I will not exceed 5 grand’s because I will be stuped if did that

i’ve had skylines, skyline gt-r’s. i currently have a g35 and the new r35 gt-r. this is not just a glorified g35… the only thing that resembles a similarity are the front side markers, and the gas cap… everything else (even the wipers) is different.
different chassis, interior, engine, suspension, brakes, stereo, seats, headlights, fuel tank, etc…
i don’t even see where this comment is originating from, unless you are confusing the past skyline gt-r models that used a skyline chassis and added some performance components much like bmw still does with the m3.

For you guys opting for the 911s well its clear that you definitely prefer big names to big performance figures. the gtr is still a nissan but will easily sprint ahead of the porsche anytime like it or not. you porsche fans just av to admit and swallow the my gtr will rev the daylights out of your porsches

Porsche is a over-rated, glorified beetle! You all just a bunch of sheep following years of brainwashing from brilliant marketing. You all want to get into your investigations of cars and safety. You overlooking the fact that NO german car in the world measures up to the reliability of Nissan, Toyota, Honda and even Hyundai for that matter. Wake up here is a car that costs half of what a porsche does and I will kick your porsche over-priced ass in it. Have a nice day
