tapout charles mask lewis ferrari crash

Yesterday March 11, 2009, in Newport Beach there was a super deadly crash involving 2 exotic cars and as a result TAPOUT founder Charles “Mask” Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene, a second injured, a third arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter and a fourth person detained by police.

A Newport Beach Police Officer who witnessed the wreck; saw a red Ferrari and a white Porsche “spinning out of control” on Jamboree Road between Bison Avenue and East Bluff Drive at 12:57 a.m. Checkout the very last video, you can see the passenger side turn signal still flashing even though the car was cut in half!

The speed limit on the road is 50 mph.

A female passenger in the Ferrari was ejected during the crash and taken to a hospital, where she was treated and currently in stable condition.

“The vehicle had moderate damage and appeared to be consistent with the car involved in the accident on Jamboree,” Fox said. “They determined that the male had been driving the Porsche, and he was arrested” for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, he said.

Police identified the driver of the Porsche as Jeffrey David Kirby, 51, of Costa Mesa, and said his bail was set at $1 million. Newport Beach resident Lynn Marie Nabozny, 32, was a passenger in the Porsche and was arrested for public intoxication. She was released about 7:45 a.m. and will not be formally charged, Fox said. He said the investigation is ongoing but that police identified skid marks at the scene “consistent with excessive speeding.”

Newport Beach Lt. Craig Fox said. “The Ferrari hit the curb and then collided with a pole.” The Porsche came to a stop at the scene for a few seconds and then sped away, Fox said. “It was terrible. It was extensive damage to the vehicle,” Fox said, adding that the Ferrari appeared to have split in half.

It’s pretty amazing how he tore his car in half like this. This will be really hard on his friends and his family — combination of being mad at him for doing this and being overwhelmed with sadness and despair.

I am in complete shock over his death. I was, and most definately still am, a fan of his. And what’s with the above posts? This man, a extremely good person, was killed, and the only thing some idiots will post are about the value of a damn car. Screw the car! Charles “Mask” Lewis is dead, and a LOT of people are impacted by his death. I wish some idiots would learn to GROW UP.

I don’t follow the sport of beating each other to a pulp. I’m sure he was a nice guy. I’m sure he gave some back (for tax purposes). However, the fact remains that other people could easily have been killed as a result of his CARELESS actions. At least it was a pole he hit and not some one bringing their sick kid to the hospital! I also agree that the posts here should not be completely without respect. A man died. We can learn from it. What angers people is that he died while racing a car worth more than most of our homes, most likely under the influence and came VERY close to causing the death of other people as a result. He showed no respect for the safety of others, and that’s why he gets so little in return! If a burglar got shot breaking into a home, people wouldn’t jump out and say “he was a nice guy”! They would say he deserved it! Which, if you read past the actual words, is what people are saying here…nice guy or not. Perhaps he was the one who needed to “grow up” …if he had, he might still be here.

Dude, for someone who has built so much to die so senselessly……extreeeeeeeeemly hi speeds are required to tear a chassis apart like that. Thank god the female passenger survived and is stable….to often the one responsible for the crash survives and the innocent dies. When will our success stories stop self destructing…….sad.

Well said. Those ‘haters’ mean everything above. I’m sure he was a nice guy and was well regarded, but like observer said, he made a STUPID decision that could easily have killed many more people, children included. As it stands, it was just him who was killed, so that’s the good news. If anything, this should be an example to his fans and everyone else showing what poor and careless decisions can end up costing you. I read this stuff in the news and I honestly have little remorse for those involved. If this guy had slammed into a vehicle in which your kids/wife/husband/family, etc. were riding in and killed and/or seriously injured them, you wouldn’t be the first one to be crapping sunshine and daisies for this guy. Only the innocent victims get my sympathy, which, clearly, “Mask” was not.

Mask was a great man and made HUGE accomplishments towards the AMAZING sport of MMA. For all of the immature asshole commenters on his death…you should watch the news!! He wasn’t racing, it was found another man whom was under the influence caused his death. Jeffrey Kirby and HIS EXTREME negligence killed a great man, not his “living life on the edge”. Which BTW-you have one life so you should live a little as long as you dont endanger other lives. Mask was an honorable man and only deserves the best, you shouldn’t judge someone by their views on life or on what they love…everyone is different and that’s what makes each of us GREAT!!

    45. JuJitSuCUTIE said on April 2nd, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Plus, about the money thing…he started at the bottom and worked his way up. He started selling t0shirts out of the back of a truck and just so happen to become BIG. He was following a dream just as most of us all are. He also helped HUNDREDS of other men take their dream and make it real…how many of us in an average lifetime can say we ACTUALLY helped someone ELSE?? He paid his dues. So for all of you who believe the worth of his life was anything but SPECTACULAR…have you ever tasted your own blood? Have you ever taken a fist to the face and thought of only victory instead of the pain? …of defeat?? I doubt it. And that’s MMA..that’s the courage, and strength Mask stood for. PAIN IS TEMPORARY…GLORY IS FOREVER (my life motto)

    66. observer said on April 5th, 2009 at 2:29 am

look guys, I linked here from an “automobile” site. So will many others. That’s why all the car comments (some I agree are in very bad taste). Not that yours are in any better taste. Telling me, or anyone else expressing the real truth about what happened here, to go “f__k their moms” is only showing the maturity level of his fan base..and is not helping his memory at all.

I also started at rock bottom and worked my way up. I did it with my brain and not my fists..but I don’t have a problem with either way. (not “hatin”..just making a point) I have a fast car and a fast bike. People who end up in the news this way give us true speed freaks a bad name. Yes I like to go very fast! I just choose to do it on the track and not @ 2AM on a freeway! It’s a controlled risk that all involved understand and are prepared for, it’s all in the same direction and there are rescue personel. I also don’t drink, which greatly reduces my chances of making this type of mistake. I’ve been involved in a major accident. Totalled a “fast” car in the process.. but wasn’t speeding. I was not injured and my car was not SPLIT IN FREAKIN HALF! This takes extreme SPEED. If alcohol was or wasn’t involved, we’ll likely never know (they’re trying to preserve his image and I’m fine with that). That was actually an effort to take some of the blame off of him. I know your idol died…but he made the decision (drunk or not) to reach that kind of speed on a public road and could have killed another persons idol..like a parent, brother or sister. I tried to find the line between anger for what he did and sympathy for those who lost a friend. Anger won. Had he just simply died in a car crash, freak accident or been hit head on by a drunk driver..I would be on the other side with you. Those of us that aren’t blinded by his fame can see the picture clearly: He was racing a porsche, the other guy had been drinking (Mask may have been too), they were going way too fast, one of them lost it, got together and he hit a pole. You can’t look at those pictures and tell me he wasn’t going flat out as fast as that car could go. It is absolutely amazing that anyone in that car lived. We’ve all made mistakes, his could have very easily killed someone innocent and just happened to be in the public eye. I am sorry for all of you who lost a hero…I am even more sorry that the hero was the cause.

A good man died, he always said “I don’t know if I will touch a million people, but I might touch the one who will touch a million people.” All he wanted was to make this world a better place. He saw the good in people and all he asked from his crew was “Win or lose, do your best.” and in all reality this is all we can ask of people and do it ourselves.

My prayers are with his family and friends, he will be missed.

Look…Everyone on the MMA/Tapout side of the story knows what an influence Charles Mask really was. To the sport he will be missed and never forgoten. I’m not here to pick sides between the car lovers and MMA fans/fighters. All I know is that the fact is he’s gone. It doesn’t help to sit here and speculate how it happened or what might have been the influence involved. All I would ask of everybody is to please respect that he was a role model to many people when it came to sports and ethics in the MMA. It doesn’t matter how fast he was or wasn’t going now. Just take a second and realize that this is a human being and that if this was your friend or family member that made the same decision…you would definately be standing up for them too. My condolences to the ENTIRE MMA/Tapout family. Because thats exactly what we are. FAMLIY!!!

      What a shame…

Charles “Mask” Lewis deserves tremendous credit for “living the dream” by taking an idea, working hard, and turning it into a highly successful business. Equally, he now represents a clear example of the risk of making one bad decision. Hopefully people can learn from that mistake. Mask paid the ultimate price, and the worst part about it is that it was totally avoidable.

To the envious ignorant people posting negative comments about Mask and little to say about the piece of drunken shit still alive and whose bond is still way too low to justify the actions of causing the loss of a great person whose life had more impact than any porsche driving Trust fund baby is disgusting to anyone who knows what a great humanitarian and American success story. The fact that it happened at 2A.M. at least shows that while it may have been a poor judgement call at the time,I would bet that he wouldn’t have considered pushing the speed envelope during heavy traffic hours and certainly wasn’t a drunken idiot like his “murderer”Hateful comments by those posting comments showing their I.Q. levels and the envy felt by those who wish they had the ability to contribute to a great sport and a great human being-whether you found his career or attire in bad taste is irrelevant.I personally feel anyone hiding behind a computer making hateful comments to be a coward and a pussy and would’ve died or been critically injured regardless of their junk hoopdie car when confronted with a drunk who didn’t know their limitations. The world wouldn’t have missed the shit-talkers loss at any rate and would’ve been better off if the fecal matter wrapped in human skin would have died instead. R.I.P. Mask-you.ve contributed more in your short life than the jealous haters could even dream of ..P.S. This man has brought a great sense of humor and sincerity to tapout shows. he also was there to help bring rising stars into the marital arts world. charles “Mask’ lewis deserves love and so does his family in this terrible accident. Lift up his name as Mask tried to lift up fellow rising MMA people. Also remember the pranks and jokes he brought to the show. people can find its easier to find fault and disgrace his whole existince by ignorant words. I know if it was the other way around and the people who cast judgement and stones had it happen to them, they would be the first ones begging for consolence.. Charles “MASK” Lewis to a man who was trying to bring alittle joy into this world thru his life and TAPOUT.

    98. Money is Satanic said on May 4th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I hate to say it by money is the root of all evil. Most people who get really rich fast like this cannot handle it they party, drive fast expensive cars, and screw multiple women. I say most not all (Warren Buffet) could buy and sell this guy a million times over. He still lives in a modest home and you’d think he is an average joe. Guys like this think they own the world and they can do anything they want. In the end we all end up 6 feet under. had this guy not gotten wealthy he’d most likely be driving a Honda Accord and still be alive. You decide if its all worth it

    99. Robert said on May 4th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

Money had nothing to do with it, I can go down the street right now and find a decently fast car for under 10K. It is just one of those things. he had a nice, fast car an pushed the limits. A honda accord can still go decently fast, it would just take the wrong person to test the limits at the wrong time. I have a fast mustang and yea i race it, but not on the street where different variable come into play. I take it to the track where it belongs. Money had nothing to do with it, he could have done it in a civic. with as much as this guy gave back to his community and his business i cant say he was one that thought “he owned the world” You have to look at the fact that a decent person has left his family and friends behind.

      That can’t be.

So I bought the magazine, came home, jumped on the net . . . ended up here and

Now back to Charles Lewis Jr.

This is some sad shit thats not going to go away. MMA apparel will survive and continue . . . just without the wildfire, fireworks, and magnetisum that MASK brought to it. Its a sad fuckin thing to happen . . . it’s like all of a sudden the industry has less blood to loose in it’s next fight. And really – just what we all fuckin needed . . . Another Fuckin SCAR. I am a great fan of MMA, and the TAPOUT boys. However, to those leaving messages regarding the other driver involved in this tragic accident, saying this P.O.S. is sitting in jail and still alive. Wow. Last I check they were both racing each other, according to an eye witness, going far beyond the speed limit and both vehicles spinning out of control. Unfortunately it was his Ferrari that hit the curb and the pole and split in half, and THANK GOD that his passenger somehow managed to be ejected and live through such a tragedy. The other driver might have gotten away with his life, but he also will have to carry this foolish decision with him for the rest of his life. Had it been the other way around, would everyone be saying what their saying, I dont think so. It’s tragic either way you look at it. Had the man in the Porsche died, than the Mask would be sitting in jail. It was a foolish decision on both parts, there is no one to blame or point the finger at.

A family member of mine was involved in an accident, where she was hit by a drunk driver. She was a model, thanks to the other driver, who was speeding and drunk, she was in the ICU for 3 months, broke both legs, both arms, a hip, broken ribs and major head trauma. Thankfully she lived and now after about 1 year of physical therapy can walk again and can take care of her daughter without help. I have no sympathy for people that decide to drink and speed. It’s others they put in danger. Once you exceed the speed limit by 20-30 mph, your vehicle isn’t a vessel that gets you from point A to point B, but it becomes a weapon.

For those of you who keep writing about others posts that aren’t to your liking, if you have had to live through a family member or loved one being killed by speeders or drunk drivers, you wouldn’t be saying what you’re saying. I’m not sayign that Mask passing isn’t a great tragedy as well, or saying that his life wasn’t worth living, he was and still is a hero to many, he just made one foolish decision. And all of us have had that urge, when someone pulls up next to you and revs their engine, you want to rev yours and race just to prove your car is faster. But lets face it, Ferrari vs. Porsche, must I say more. He had nothing to prove, but that’s were a little bit of male ego comes in, and we through the old rule book out the window. HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED. R.I.P. MASK.

My thoughts and prayers are going out to his family and friends. I hope that everyone can learn something from his loss. Maybe the next time some jerk pulls up next to you and wants to race, we choose to be the bigger man and just let it go. Human life, no matter who you are, is way to precious. You only live ones, make it worth it. And I also hope that the gentleman that drove the Porsche can get through this and hopefully live a better life. Like many said before me. Karma. Well for those who are saying negative things about others, are no better than the ones that are saying the bad things. We all will get judged. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. God bless his family, may they find piece with this tragic loss.

He made his mark. He and his crew epitomized how you can take an idea and dream, work hard and make it happen. Selling T-shirts out of a truck to Tap Out is truly what this country is about. Couldn’t care less about what people think about his style, dress or whatever.. He and his crew were and are one of a kind. Benz is holding it down for a corpse…wow what an idiot. Was the Mask really your friend? What did he do for you? You can say whatever you want about my mother because she’s dead…just like the mask asshole.
When you make stupid ass choices like he did you get stupid ass results. If you have smarts then use them. Don’t do what he did. Obviously it was a dumbass decision and he ended his story just like that.
You can’t change the stupid ass thing that he did no matter how much you want to defend former idiots like him. Intelligent choices are made by intelligent people and intelligent people get to live another day by being responsible and not risking other peoples lives like he did.
Now do something good with your life instead of being a follower of animal like muscle heads who beat the living shit out of each other for entertainment. Develop your mind for a change.

Your mothers DEAD ???? Your an Intelligent Person ??? You Make Intelligent Choises in life ????

Then why the FUCK don’t you understand ” Sadness” ???
Then why the FUCK don’t you understand “Memorial” ???
Then why the FUCK are you going around saying what your saying ???

Really what does it take for you to use that Intelligence that you say you have ???
What actually do you use your Intelligence for ???
Other then going out of your way . . . . To read an articlle about a Guy you didn’t like, you have no respect for, and from what I can tell . . . Your happyier then a pig in shit , that he’s DEAD.

You ask me. .. . . . what MASK ever did for me ???
      Nothing.
But at one point in his life . . . He sold t-shirt that he designed, out of the trunk of his car.

You ever try to do that ???? You ever live that lifestyle ???
You ever try saving up enough money so you can buy a car to have a trunk to sell your t shirts out of ???
You ever use any of your Intelligence to try and create something ???
Other then to try and destroy everything.
You ever use your Intelligence to think of a thought and turn that thought into an EMPIRE.

      It’s a tough fight MAN !!!
In fact sometimes you just want to TAPOUT.

And sometimes you just have to ignore all the assholes like you
      And BELIEVE.

Leave the guy alone benz. He’s right. So what if he sold t shirts out of a trunk! Do you think he is the first poor fucker to try to make it from nothing?
I grew up on welfare because my Mom was a drug addict. I grew up with not a fucking chance and I came through to make a decent living. I had my ass kicked my whole childhood and was told I was a mistake. I survived. Who the fuck doesn’t have their own sad struggle story to tell except for the one’s born into wealth?
I didn’t however go and act like an idiot only to risk other peoples lives and then take my own because of my stupid choice. Maybe Mask was a decent guy but he should be an example of what not to do just because you make lots of money.
What a waste of everyone’s time to sit here and write this shit.
Let the idiot rest in peace.

This will end all the speculation and anything else you idiots want to say about my friend Mask.
He was a hero of cage sports. He was a great t shirt salesman and a true artist. He was such a great designer of those shirts that he should get a congressional medal of honor from the President of Iran.
He was so artistic and gay-like that he really took care of his REAL FRIENDS.
HE USED TO SUCK MY COCK SO GOOD THAT HE MADE MY ASS WHISTLE!! NOW THAT IS A TRUE FRIEND!!! THE MASK COULD SUCK THE CHROME OFF A TRAILER HITCH BABY!
PUNKASS ALSO LOVES IT UP THE ASS…WHAT A LOOSE BUTHOLE HE’S GOT!!!!!!!

      But . . . . But . . . . But . . . Evan, . . . . . Mask can suck my balls and make my ass whistle ???????

What the FUCK are you all talking about ???

      Really. . . . What are you trying to C. . . .O. . . . N .. . .M . . . .U . . . .N . . . .I . . .. C . . .A . . . .T . . . . .E. ?????

      You harbor some homoerotic fantasy about him . . . . ????
You like nice cars and are pissed off he crashed one . . . ????
You can be the worlds biggest DICK ?????

      I get it . . .

But if you think that’s the way someone should be remembered.

      OOPS…
      YOU’RE RIGHT.
HE WAS A GREAT T SHIRT SALESMAN AND WE NEED TO REMEMBER HIM FOR THAT.
HE ACTED LIKE AN IDIOT ON TV BECAUSE HE GOT THE OPORTUNITY TO ENTERTAIN NUMB MINDED PEOPLE WHO THINK GUYS WHO PUT MAKE UP ON THEIR FACES ARE SOMEHOW GOOD ENTERTAINMENT.

HE CAME FROM STRUGGLE AND HE IS THE FIRST TO DO THAT TOO…RIGHT ASSHOLE EVAN?

IF SOMEONE CAN TALK ABOUT SOMETHING THAT HE DID FOR THOSE LESS FORTUNATE AFTER HE MADE MILLIONS THEN THAT IS WORTH REMEMBERING.

IF YOU CAN’T SHOW US SOMETHING BESIDES GETTING LUCKY FROM HARD WORK THEN YOU ARE THE TYPICAL AMERICAN IDIOT WHO NEEDS A SERIOUS REALITY CHECK.

WHO DID HE HELP AND WHAT DID HE GIVE BACK?

OH POOR EVAN IS A LOSER WHO NEEDS A FAKE HERO…HOW ABOUT KISS? THEY WEAR MAKEUP AND MAKE INSANE MILLIONS BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY IDIOTS WHO THINK THEY HAVE TALENT AND KEEP THROWING MONEY AT THEM.

IF YOU THINK THERE IS A LICK OF JEALOUSY HERE…THINK AGAIN. I MAKE PLENTY OF MONEY AND HAVE MADE IT FROM NOTHING TOO.
YAHOO…I’M A HERO LIKE MASK BUT I DON’T RISK MY LIFE WHILE RISKING OTHERS TOO.

IT’S HARD NOT TO REMEMBER HIM FOR HIS LAST STUPID MOVE.
I’M HAPPY TO LISTEN TO SOMETHING BESIDES THE T SHIRT THING IF THERE WAS ANYTHING POSITIVE ABOUT THE GUY.

GET YOU HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS AND THE CLOUDS AND APPRECIATE THOSE WHO AREN’T “TV MADE” HEROS!!!

    135. Evan Benz said on October 1st, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Who did he help and what did he give back ?

He helped Mixed Martial Arts as a Industry.
He sponsored quite a few fighters with some free gear.
      And he’s a hero to t-shirt designers.

What more do you want ?

He had just gotten to that point in his life where he could finally relax and go out and get himself something nice.

To which he got himself a Ferrari.
That same one that’s in a million different pieces at the top of this web page.

I’m getting the feeling like you want some Mother Terresa/Chevron Corporation type of Charity Work . . . Before you give anyone their due.

All I can say , is he never got the chance.
He worked and he worked and he worked.
      He finally made it.
He bought himself a fancy car.
And ended up killing himself playing around with it.

I just don’t get the point . . . Why, when someone dies. . . . Some people see it as an opportunity to go around and say stupid shit.

Really . . . . You show up somewhere . . . See some sad people mourning the death of someone that had an influence on their life . .. . And the thought that pops into your brain is, Fuck That Guy and Fuck all you sad people too.
      He’s a dumbass. . . . He could have killed me !!!
He got what he deserved !!!

      Maybe he did.
And then again maybe he didn’t.

It just dawned on me. . . . Maybe your way of missing someone is too tell them their a Idiot. Like Larry Darrell in The Razors Edge.

MASK . . . I never liked that guy. He was a really selfish guy.
He never helped anyone. He will not be missed. I’m glad he’s gone.
The worlds a better place without him !!!
