BMW‘s X6 seemed like a venture into unexplored territory, but it now has some company in the form of this crossover from Acura, called the ZDX. The Acura ZDX was displayed at the New York Motor Show after being teased by means of images released by Honda. Acura used such words as “sensuous” and “emotional” to describe the ZDX prototype and said in a statement that it was clearly in the hunt for “an entirely new customer.”

The Acura ZDX and Acura MDX bear a very close analogy to the BMW X5 and X6. So there is no mystery surrounding who Acura is going after. The concept’s styling cues will probably make it to the production version when it hits the roads in fall 2009. At 4887mm (192.4 inches), it is 2 inches longer than the MDX and but nearly 12 inches longer than the RDX (what’s with those names?). It is lower than its siblings by 4-7 inches though signifying its coupe like shape.

Detailing includes an all glass tailgate, a panoramic glass roof, 20 inch tires and wheels. Integration of door handles in the C-pillar is a nice touch. When launched, the ZDX will come with a V6 engine mated to a six speed automatic and all wheel drive dubbed Super Handling – All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). “Sorry, we will not be announcing the engine size,” said Acura spokesman Chuck Schifsky in response to an e-mail query from Inside Line.

Technological gadgets include a new Blind Spot information system which when combined with a new multi-view rear camera with wide angle views equates to easier parking and maneuvering in tight spots. The interiors of the show car featured a dual cockpit layout embellished with hand stitched black-pearl-white leather trim. This might be offered as an option on higher end versions and left out on basic versions to save costs.

While pricing has not yet been announced, we expect it to range between $42,000 and $50,000.
