The Ford Mustang has been around for over 50 years, and in that time there have been almost as many iterations of the iconic pony car coming from Ford’s own factory and numerous other after-market tuners. The legendary American icon Carol Shelby gave his name to the most extreme versions of the Mustang. It was only a matter of time before the 2015 Mustang received the Shelby treatment, and it’s finally here. Instead of debuting the new 2015 Shelby GT at the Detroit Auto Show this past week, Shelby decided to skip it and revealed the car at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction in Arizona this weekend.

The Shelby GT is an upgrade package for the existing Mustang GT. The package adds a whole list of go-fast goodies that includes a supercharger, a Borla exhaust system, stickier Michelin tires, lightweight rims, a carbon fiber hood, bigger brakes, fully adjustable suspension, and a 3.73 ratio gearbox. Oh yeah, it also has 627 horsepower! No performance numbers have been released as yet, but with a 4.4 second 0-60 mph time of the 435 hp Mustang GT, expect the new Shelby GT to demolish it with a time in the mid 3 second range.

This will also be an interesting car to keep an eye out for, as it is the first generation of Mustangs with independent rear suspension. The previous generation Shelby GT500 had more horsepower, with 662, but it was considered to have brutish handling with its archaic live rear axle suspension set up. This new generation Shelby GT should be able to not only put the power to the ground better, it should also behave better on track.

As you can imagine, the price for this astonishing upgrade package isn’t cheap. Shelby is charging $39,995 USD for the package, not including the donor car. In Canada, the 2015 Ford Mustang GT has an MSRP of $39,775 CAD. After it’s all said and done, the 2015 Shelby GT should cost around $85,000 CAD plus taxes.

An important aspect for a car is for it to have easy and better handling and with this Shelby’s incorporation of the independent rear suspension, we are hoping it’s going be such. This GT has sleek and shiny looks and couple that with top notch performance, for sure it’s worth its massive price.
