Dutch automotive magazine Autovisie is reporting that McLaren is going to reveal their new sports car, appropriately named the Sports Series, at the 2015 New York Auto Show this April. They also say that there will be at least four variations of the new carbon-fibre baby McLaren.

If a reminder is needed on the Sport Series, here is a bit of a refresher. The new McLaren Sport Series is going to be a mid-engined sports car positioned beneath the 650S in terms of price and performance. It will be built on a stiff carbon fiber monocoque and have a detuned version of the 3.8L twin turbo V8 that the McLaren P1 and 650S use.  The engine is rumoured to produce around 530 hp in the Sport Series, which places it as a direct competitor to the 520 hp Porsche 911 Turbo and the 510 hp Mercedes-Benz AMG GT-S.

According to the reports, initially only the coupe is going to debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show, with the convertible version coming shortly thereafter.  McLaren is also reportedly working on a comfort oriented grand touring model to add to the Sport Series line. It will come with added luggage space and have less aggressive gearing for better fuel mileage.  The last iteration will be, unsurprisingly, a lightweight track-focused model that is to be named the Sport Series GTR and will be a competitor to the Porsche 911 GT3.

This is the first time that McLaren is going to have a road car to compete in this segment of sports cars, meanwhile Porsche has had at least 50 years experience in this market. It will be interesting to see how the Sports Series will compare to the 911 on both road and track
