The 6th generation Chevrolet Camaro debuted in Detroit last week with new interior and exterior designs, and some interesting performance modifications. Unlike most makeovers, the 6th generation Camaro will actually get smaller, faster, and more agile, adding new powertrains and suspension to increase variety in the new release.

Chevy is following in the footsteps of Ford regarding the models it will offer. Firstly, it’s more powerful. There will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, creating 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s the all-new 3.6-liter, direct-injection V-6, creating 335 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque (yes, the 2.0 delivers more torque than the 3.6). And last but not least, the SS sporting the Corvette Stingray- sourced LT1 engine, a 455-horsepower, 455 lb-ft, 6.2-liter V-8.  It’s the most powerful Camaro SS ever.

Mark Reuss, GM’s vice president of global product development said that engineers have included every new technology in this car, “not so that we can compete, but so we can win.” Such technologies include the SS active fuel management that can shut off four cylinders when cruising on the highway.

More interestingly engineers have shed more than 200 lbs overall on the body and chassis of the Camaro, cutting weight at any given opportunity. Thankfully the diet was targeted to the architecture of the car and the performance was not sacrificed, as the body is 28% stiffer.

All of these additions to the 6th generation Camaro mean only one thing; this car will be a force to be reckoned with. The muscle car war continues into 2016 and we’re looking forward to the premiers of some track times for the new Camaro.
