The highly anticipated annual car rally known as the Gumball 3000 has formally commenced its 3,000 mile car fest. As has been standard in past years, David Hasselhoff waved off the 90 participants from the insane auto race’s starting line, as a horde of mutant vehicles thundered off toward Belfast and a ship to Scotland on their approach to Istanbul.

Both Gumball and the opponent One Lap of America rally owe their motivation to the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, a cross-country race arranged via Car and Driver supervisor Brock Yates in the 1970s to protest the law of a national 55 mph speed limit. Gumball 3000 began in 1999, and it gets more and more crazy every year.

Here are some of the highlight cars from this year’s rally:

The current year’s most peculiar Gumball anomaly might be the Saudi group that appeared in a Lamborghini V10-controlled, Batmobile-enlivened creation that is a mutant, formed of half military vehicle and half speed racer.

Another driver, who has stayed unknown, assembled a Formula One-style race car. We are still not sure how this vehicle can be street legal (possibly that is the purpose behind the driver’s secrecy), nonetheless he’s as of now made it from Dublin to London.

Briggs Automotive Company wrapped one of its Mono track cars in Gumball 3000-themed gold foil for the event, however Briggs stated that the car will show up at select urban communities, so it would appear that nobody is driving it the entire distance.

The Gumpert Apollo slipped off after downpour left Scottish interstate wet over the weekend. Driver and passenger were both left uninjured, however the same cannot be said for the car.

The Gumball 3000 concludes May 7th in Instanbul.
