Back in the 1990’s, BMW‘s most opulent two-door coupé was the 8-series class of cars. The “base” 840Ci came with a V8, however it was the top-of-the-line 850Ci and 850CSi with the big V12s that really got everyone’s attention. Since it’s demise in 1999, BMW left the slot at the top of their product line-up empty with the biggest two-door coupé being the 6-series. Now we have confirmation from BMW themselves that there will be a new 8-Series coming to a golf club parking lot near you!

All jokes aside, it is about time that BMW put out a largely excessive coupé into the market. While Mercedes-Benz has the S-Class coupé (formerly known as the CL-Class), BMW had nothing beyond it’s 6-Series coupe to really compete in that segment.

The 8-Series Concept that BMW just unveiled at the 2017 Concours d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is a real work of art. The sculpture and metal working into gorgeous shapes makes it known that BMW wants their new flagship coupé not only compete with the S-Class coupés and Bentley Continental GTs of this world, but also outclass them in design alone. BMW has incorporated design elements from the striking i8 hybrid-electric sports car, which become apparent in the design of the front nose and rear of the car.

One of the most exciting tidbits of news is that BMW has confirmed an M8 variation on the platform. Since their is no information as of now on drivetrain or performance figures, I can dream that BMW will stuff a high-revving naturally aspirated V12 and give the driver a 3 pedal set-up. Sadly, that is a very small possibility, if any. BMW will most likely put V8 variations throughout the 8-series model line-up and possibly the twin-turbo V8 from the upcoming M5, albeit with a little more oomph fitting for their flagship.

In any case, the new BMW 8-Series is slated for production in 2019. Judging from the pictures, it looks like it is definitely worth the wait!
