It has happened with Michael Jordan, it has happened with Brett Favre, and it has happened even with Jay-Z. So perhaps it is no surprise that another superstar icon has announced he is coming out of retirement. Michael Schumacher is coming back to F1, but not to Ferrari. The new Mercedes-Brawn F1 team made the official announcement December 23, 2009 that the Seven Time World Champion will be driving for them in 2010 along with Nico Rosberg.

Schumacher started his F1 career in 1991 with Jordan, but as a contracted Mercedes driver. He went on to win his 7 titles all under director Ross Brawn (2 with Benetton, 5 with Ferrari.) Now he returns under Ross Brawn once again. When the 2010 season kicks off in Australia on March 26th, Schumi will be 41 years old.

Can a 41 year old compete with 25 year old athletes in their prime. I have to say, very unlikely. Schumacher is obviously supremely competitive, and he is returning clearly with one goal in mind – Another Title.

But Alonso is also intensely competitive, and he’s going to be in a Ferrari. Somehow I find it difficult to see how Schumacher has a chance, when Alonso beat him pretty nicely during Schumacher’s last two seasons (2005 and 2006.) And that was with Alonso in a Renault and Schumacher in a Ferrari under Ross Brawn.

I think Schumacher is going to have a difficult fight against Alonso in a Ferrari, but it is sure going to be fun to watch the two compete. It’s also going to be interesting to see Lewis Hamilton race against Schumacher, as Hamilton started F1 just after Schumacher left.

2010 is going to be a very interesting season, with 4 world champions gunning for the title. Stay Tuned…

There is a very good reason why Mercedes-Benz and McLaren recently chose their own paths. They are just so different in their approach – The Mercedes Benz SLS Gullwing and the Mclaren MP4 12C are as different as chalk is to cheese. While the 12C is a no compromise precision tool, the SLS is a legend reborn. Way back in the 1950’s the Mercedes Benz 300 SL was an absolute scorcher and was the supercar of its time.

The SLS is expected to be softer than the McLaren and will also be a better everyday car. What’s more, its got lots of style and that legendary history. We haven’t even started to checkout those amazing Gullwing doors yet! With 571bhp, it is pretty much even on the power stakes as the Ferrari 458 Italia and the 12C. This is Mercedes’ first in-house supercar (their last one was the SLR and the SL Black is not exactly a supercar) and it also is AMG’s first.

The recipe has always remained the same. It follows the classic layout – Front Engine rear Wheel drive, a long Bonnet and short rear end. Its just out of the textbook. Once the car was complete, it looks spectacular (it isn’t to everybody’s tastes but still) and the party piece doors are a trademark. Prices for this car also hover around the $290,000 mark, again within its rivals. Expect it to go on sale in 2010.

Mercedes have stuck to their full fat 6.3l V8 monster (rather than downsizing) and this block produces a good 571bhp and up to 650Nm of torque. While the power figures are lower compared to the size of the engine, the SLS is no slouch. Standing 60mph will be dealt with in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed hitting 200mph with just a bit of tailwind. Contributing to such raw speed is the new 7-speed Dual Clutch Tranny (DCT) that every car from the EVO X to the GTR to the 458 Italia and even the 12C have in common.

With a curb weight of 1620Kg, we are not quite sure if it can match the 12C and the Ferrari 458 Italia on agility but we definitely believe that it should be an excellent grand tourer and offer more practicality as an everyday supercar. The rear biased 53:47 weight distribution will definitely provide maximum ability that this chassis has. The chassis itself is made of aluminum and not carbon fibre. This ensures lightness compared to steel chassis of other Mercedes cars. The chassis weighs in at just 241Kgs which is super light but also loses out to carbon fibre bred rivals.

The AMG 6.3L V8 engine’s power is delivered through an ultra-light carbon-fiber drive shaft at the rear axle – similar to the set-up used on the DTM C-Class touring race car. The dual clutch transmission is used in transaxle configuration and is at the rear for effective weight distribution. Critical suspension components like wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers are made from forged aluminium thereby reducing unsprung mass and speeding up response. If AMG high performance brakes are not good enough, composite discs are a high performance option also reducing weight by 40%. The lightweight theme is ised in the 19in and 20 in front-rear wheels respectively. Made using flow forming principle, they reduce unsprung mass.

It will be offered in either Alanite Grey, Alubeam Silver, Syvanite Grey, and a shade of red for the exterior colors, with leather and alcantara on the interior. The interiors follow classic dials and reminds us of the good old 300SL. All we have to wait for now is a grand showdown between the Italia, 12C and the SLS. My pick is the gorgeous Ferrari Italia and I can smell something cooking in Lamborghini’s camp too!

PRESS RELEASE

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which is about to celebrate its world premiere on 15 September 2009 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main, embodies a blend of consummate automotive fascination and high tech. The super sports car delivers a compelling mix of purist styling, consistent lightweight design and superior driving dynamics. At the same time, the SLS fully lives up to all the expectations of hallmark Mercedes everyday practicality and optimum safety. In essence, the new ’Gullwing’ offers the ideal synthesis of the strengths of Mercedes-Benz and AMG.

The new super sports car from Mercedes-Benz and AMG makes for an alluring proposition with its unrivalled technology package: aluminium spaceframe body with gullwing doors, AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine developing 420 kW/ 571 hp peak output, 650 Nm of torque and dry sump lubrication, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration, sports suspension with aluminium double wishbones and a kerb weight of 1620 kilograms based on the DINstandard – this superlative combination guarantees driving dynamics of the highest order. The ideal front/rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 percent and the vehicle’s low centre of gravity are testimony to the uncompromising sports car concept. The ’Gullwing’ accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 317 km/h (electronically limited). The fuel consumption of 13.2 litres per 100 kilometres (combined) puts it at the front of the competitive field (all figures provisional).

“Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exhilarating super sports car in the guise of the new SLS AMG, which is bound to set the pulses of all car enthusiasts racing that extra bit faster. The brands Mercedes-Benz and AMG have joined forces to create the SLS AMG– which is set to become one of the most alluring sports cars of all time”, says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“Our customers will experience with the SLS AMG the expertise of Mercedes-AMG, built up over 40 years of motor racing. The unrivalled technology package delivers outstanding driving dynamics coupled with moderate fuel consumption figures – part and parcel of the modern-day AMG,” says Volker Mornhinweg, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

“The styling of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is not only very special because of the exclusive gullwing doors. Our aspiration is to utilise this interpretation to create the classic of tomorrow and roll out the most alluring sports car of the 21st century. Our aim is also to create a new design icon, which shapes the incomparable legend of our brand, alongside Mercedes models like the CLS or the SL. At the same time, the new SLSpaves the way for the design philosophy of forthcoming Mercedes-Benz sports cars”, says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz Cars.
Design: purist, distinctive and passionate

The distinctive styling of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG enthrals with its passionate sportiness and reinterprets the breathtaking lines of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL – one of the outstanding design icons of the Mercedes-Benz brand. With its purist design the new SLS AMG reflects the philosophy of contemporary sports car engineering: the bonnet which measures just under two metres, the low greenhouse positioned well to the rear and the short rear-end with an extendable aerofoil are just as powerful a reminder of the superlative dynamism as the long wheelbase, the wide track and the large wheels. The short overhangs feed through into the proportions, just as does the design of the super sports car with its low-slung front-mid engine set well back and dual-clutch transmission in transaxle configuration. An undoubted styling highlight comes courtesy of the gullwing doors which lend the SLS AMG its incomparable charisma – making a unique statement in this vehicle segment.

The gullwing doors are not alone in rekindling memories of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL; the hallmark wide radiator grille with the large Mercedes star and the wing-shaped cross fins are a throwback to the front-end of the sports car legend. The three-dimensional, sculptured front-end with its low-set, swept-back front apron set well into the sides lends the ’Gullwing’ its powerful stance on the road. Six large cooling air intakes and the vertically arranged headlamps set well to the outside with their alluring inner ambience provide a dominant aura: the central bi-xenon low-beam headlamp with its metallic wing section is framed at the top by two LED indicators and the LED daytime driving lights at the bottom.

Influences from aircraft construction

Allusions to aircraft construction come courtesy of the prominent Mercedes star, whose tubular section is reminiscent of the air intake on a jet engine when viewed from the side, as well as the long bonnet: as the eye is drawn forward, so the observer becomes more aware of the curve. The design of the four fins with their Silver Shadow finish that adorn the two air outlet grilles on the end of the bonnet create the same visual impression. These aircraft-style lines also visually accelerate the air that flows past – and make the SLS AMG appear extremely dynamic even while stationary.

The fins on the bonnet are taken up on the vehicle flanks: the connoisseur also discovers here a hallmark styling feature of the 300 SL. The “6.3″ lettering placed between the fins provides a clear reference to the high-displacement naturally aspirated V8 engine. The side air outlet feeds through into a stylistically prominent feature line, which together with the convex flanks and the exhilarating surface treatment, combines aesthetics with power. The compact passenger compartment proves as alluring as it is unmistakable. With its high beltline, low side windows and steeply angled windscreen it comes across as a kind of visor. The forward angled B-pillar with its stylish flowing sweep to the rear window exudes pure dynamism.

Side view dominated by muscle and shoulder

Seen from the side, the eye is drawn to the prominent vehicle shoulder of the SLS, which stretches like a taut muscle from the front to the rear. Distinctive 19-inch (front) and 20-inch (rear) light-alloy wheels fill the wheel arches, which stand out prominently from the sidewall. Three different wheel variants all provide a glimpse of the large high-performance composite brakes. Seen from above, a prominent, uninterrupted line runs from the muscle to the rear. This styling feature is also picked up on the bonnet where the eye follows a distinctive contour which flows over the roof between the gullwing doors, right through to the third brake light.

Rear view that emphasizes width

The rear view of the SLS also exudes dynamism and power: the gently sloping boot lid emphasises a sense of width, an impression reinforced by the prominent vehicle shoulder and the sleek tail lights: fitted with LED technology, the horizontally structured lighting units provide a scintillating view. Wing-shaped LED lighting elements ensure a distinctive, enthralling night design. The Formula-1-style LED fog lamp/reversing light is set down low in the centre. Similarly inspired by motor racing are the black diffuser insert and the two chromed tailpipes of the sports exhaust system. The strikingly tapered rear apron provides an unimpeded view of the wide rear wheels, lending the ’Gullwing’ its self-assured stance on the road. The spoiler integrated in the boot lid is automatically deployed from a speed of 120 km/h to ensure optimum stability at high speeds.
New colours: “AMG ALU-BEAM silver” and two matt finishes

The colour charts for the SLS include nine exclusive paint finishes. The highlight comes in the shape of the unique “AMG ALU-BEAM silver” paintwork: the new, unique process makes the paint shine like liquid metal. The paint covers the body panels like a metallic skin, emphasises the scintillating design lines of the ’Gullwing’ more strongly than any previous paint job and makes them even livelier by means of targeted light reflections. This effect is made possible thanks to tiny pigments measuring between 30 and 50 nanometres.

The two matt finishes “designo magno allanite grey” and “AMG magno sylvanite grey” are just as eye-catching: with their matt silk surface they reinforce the sporty character of the two-seater through specific contouring of the crease lines.
Interior with allusions to aircraft construction and motor sports practicality

You only need to open the gullwing doors on the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and ease into the sports seats to experience a whole new level of interior. The Mercedes-Benz designers took their inspiration from aircraft construction when styling the interior – immediately bringing an aircraft cockpit to mind. The characteristic styling feature is the dashboard, whose powerful and dramatic wing shape makes for an impression of width. Strikingly integrated into the dashboard are the galvanised air vents with their adjustable, cruciform nozzles and Silver Shadow finish – their shape reminiscent of a jet’s engines. The instrument cluster with its LED upshift indicator and two white backlit dial instruments add another decidedly sporty touch with their metallic Silver Shadow finish. The silver dials have red needles and a 360 km/h speedometer scale. As a central feature of the cockpit, the COMAND APSmultimedia system with its 7-inch screen is integrated between the two centre air vents.

The elongated centre console in matt metal similarly picks up on the design theme of the aircraft cockpit. It is home to the AMGDRIVE UNIT, which is inclined towards the SLSdriver and allows them to choose their very own vehicle setup. The E-SELECT shift lever, whose styling recalls the thrust control of a jet, controls the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission. All the controls are made out of solid metal, with a high-sheen Silver Shadow surface.

The concave inner panels of the gullwing doors, the high beltline and the powerful side sill panels round off the cockpit-like impression, while imparting a feeling of sports car-like ergonomics. Fine materials such as nappa leather, solid metal and (optional) genuine carbon-fibre facings underline the pronounced “custom-built” nature of the SLS interior, and show enormous attention to detail. Five different designo leather colours are available to meet individual preferences: black, classic red, sand, porcelain and light brown.
Wide-opening gullwing doors for easy entry

Despite the low sitting position of just 369 millimetres in typical sports car fashion, the wide-opening gullwing doors make it easy to get in and out of the vehicle. At the design stage great attention was paid to the widest possible opening angle – it is a full 70 degrees. Equally importantly, the distance between the open doors and the road surface is a generous 1.50 metres, while the entry aperture between the open doors and the upper edge of the door sills measures no less than 1.08 metres. The entrance height, i.e. the distance between the road surface and the upper edge of the door sills is a very low 45 centimetres. As another important criterion for dignified access and egress, two gas-pressure struts positioned next to the door hinges require only very little pressure when opening and closing the doors – even at very low ambient temperatures.

The gullwing doors require less opening space than conventional coupé doors, and can be fully opened in a normal garage. The door is opened from inside by a handle finished in Silver Shadow. The grip section of the armrest moulded into the interior door panel ensures problem-free door closing. The operating buttons for the power windows, central locking system and exterior mirror adjustment are also located in the interior door panels for easy access. The feeling of comfortable spaciousness is in large measure due to the generous shoulder-room of 1483 millimetres and elbow room of no less than 1606 millimetres. In conjunction with the generous maximum headroom of 990 millimetres and effective legroom for the driver of 1058 millimetres, the result is a low but extremely relaxed seating position. At the same time the intentionally steep angle of the windscreen ensures good all-round visibility for the passengers.
Sports seats with magnesium backrests

The sports seat backrests are made from magnesium, a high-tech material that combines light weight with high strength. This leads to significant advantages where weight distribution and a low centre of gravity are concerned. The sports seats feature so-called two-zone seat cushions. Prominent side bolsters with a harder foam filling provide optimal lateral support, while the inner areas of the seat cushion and backrest are softer for a high level of comfort on long journeys. In conjunction with the Memory package (optional), the fore-and-aft position, seat height, backrest angle, squab angle and steering column are electrically adjustable; three individual settings can also be stored.

Four-way lumbar supports reliably protect the lower spine, while adjustable side bolsters in the backrests effectively improve lateral support on fast bends. Three-stage seat heating and seat occupancy/child seat recognition in the passenger seat are also standard equipment.

The sports seats with integrated head restraints and sporty transverse fluting are upholstered in designo leather – and two-tone seats are also available in classic red, sand and porcelain. If light brown is chosen as an interior colour, the sports seats are upholstered in natural leather with particularly high-quality woven leather on the centre seat panels. Depending on the colour combination, fluorescent or black piping provides another sporty touch.

The Performance leather steering wheel in a three-spoke design has a 365-millimetre rim with a flattened lower section, shift paddles and a metal insert, underlining the authentic custom-built look and ensuring the best possible vehicle control.
A host of stowage space for hallmark Mercedes day-to-day suitability

The interior of the SLS AMG also impresses with the practical stowage space that makes for the day-to-day suitability typical of a Mercedes. The 3.7-litre glove compartment with a spectacles section is integrated into the dashboard on the passenger side. To the right of the E-SELECT shift lever there is a small stowage tray with a 12 V socket, or an ashtray with cigar lighter. The armrest behind the centre console not only serves to operate the COMAND Controller: at the touch of a button, the armrest can be moved in two stages to reveal a stowage compartment underneath. This has two cupholders and the telephone cradle (optional), and a holder for the ignition key in the rear section. Other items can be stowed on the rear wall between the seats and in the parcel net in the passenger footwell. Two fixed clothes hooks are attached to the seat backrests, while those in the roof liner fold down and are silicon-insulated.

The button to unlock the boot lid is located underneath the light switch. Alternatively the boot can be opened using the ignition key. The luggage compartment can hold up to 176 litres. A made-to-measure luggage set is available as an option, which enables the boot space to be used to full advantage.

Aluminum space frame for lightweight design and outstanding strength

The SLS is also breaking the mould when it comes to the body concept: for the first time, Mercedes-Benz and AMG are presenting a car with an aluminium chassis and body. Compared with the traditional steel design, this results in a significant weight saving, clearly illustrated in the DIN kerb weight of 1620 kilograms.

The newly developed body shell comprises an aluminum space frame. This exclusive design combines intelligent lightweight design with outstanding strength – thus delivering superlative driving dynamics. Lightweight aluminum sections connect the force nodes to a sturdy structure. The large, low-set cross-sections of these aluminum sections ensure high resistance torque, thus providing the required direct transfer of drive, braking and suspension forces. The structure prevents unwanted flexibility; the vehicle responds rigidly, almost without twisting and directly.

45 percent of the intelligent, weight-optimised aluminium spaceframe is made out of aluminium sections, 31 percent out of aluminium sheet, 20 percent out of aluminium cast and 4 percent out of steel. Maximum occupant safety requires the use of ultra-high-strength, heat-formed steel in the A-pillars. The bodyshell weighs 241 kilograms – an absolute benchmark in the super sports car segment when compared with the peak output of 420 kW/571 hp.

Low center of gravity and transverse reinforcing struts for superb dynamism

The entire vehicle concept has been designed to achieve a centre of gravity that is as low as possible. This applies both to the low connection of the powertrain and axles as well as to the arrangement of the stiffness-relevant bodyshell structure, which has been kept as low as possible. Examples include the rigid flexural and torque connections between the front and rear section and the safety passenger cell, which have been realised consistently using force paths that are as low as possible. This results not only in a low centre of gravity but also a harmonious and, thus, efficient force path in the vehicle structure.

Another prominent feature of the lightweight construction design is the transverse reinforcing struts at the front and rear axle that are integrated into the bodyshell structure. The sections connect the side members precisely where the highest forces act upon the bodyshell under dynamic cornering. The advantages of this sophisticated solution include unrivalled transverse rigidity and the absence of heavy secondary stiffening or supports.

Passive safety of the very highest caliber

Naturally, the aluminium spaceframe meets all the requirements in terms of passive safety and the hallmark Mercedes-Benz body quality that applies to any car sporting the Mercedes star. The best possible passive safety for the occupants is ensured by the standard-fit three-point seat belts, belt tensioners, belt force limiters and eight airbags: two adaptive airbags and a kneebag each are available for the driver and passenger. Two sidebags integrated into the seats and two separate windowbags that deploy from the door waistline are also available.
Fine-tuned AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine developing 420 kW/571 hp

A powerful eight-cylinder engine manufactured by Mercedes-AMG forms the heart of the new SLS. The fine-tuned 6.3-litre V8 engine develops 420 kW/571 hp at 6800 rpm, turning the SLS AMGinto one of the most powerful sports cars in its segment. A power-to-weight ratio of 2.84 kg/hp comes courtesy of the low vehicle weight. The naturally aspirated engine delivers maximum torque of 650 Nm at 4750 rpm. The ’Gullwing’ accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, before going on to a top speed electronically limited to 317 km/h (all figures are provisional). Bearing the internal designation M 159, the V8 high-revving engine with its displacement of 6208 cubic centimetres has been thoroughly reengineered compared with the M 156 entry-level engine and boasts all the hallmarks of powerful racing engines.

The principal measures in increasing output include the all-new intake system, the reworked valve train and camshafts, the use of flow-optimised tubular steel headers and the de-throttling of the exhaust system. This results in much better cylinder charging, which feeds through into an increase in output of almost nine percent. The eight-cylinder engine responds swiftly to movements of the accelerator pedal, demonstrating much more pronounced high-revving flexibility across the entire rev range. The switch to dry sump lubrication also translates into a much lower position of the engine in the vehicle. And lowering the vehicle’s centre of gravity has also paved the way for high lateral acceleration and exhilarating driving dynamics.
Perfect synthesis of lightweight design and strength

The use of high-strength components compensates for the increased engine load associated with the higher output. Forged pistons, a reinforced crankshaft bearing, optimised crankcase structure, along with improved lubrication thanks to an on?demand high-performance oil pump ensure optimum durability. Despite these higher loads, the engine weight for the M 159 has been further reduced. The forged pistons as oscillating masses play a particularly valuable role in this respect, resulting in a kerb weight of 205 kilograms and, in turn, a power-to-weight ratio of 0.36 kg/hp – an unrivalled figure compared with the competition. Sophisticated catalytic converter technology enables current and future exhaust emission standards such as EU 5, LEV 2 and ULEV to be met.

A match for demanding fuel consumption targets

Despite its uncompromisingly sporty character, the demanding fuel consumption targets have been met. The SLS AMGconsumes 13.2 litres per 100 kilometres (combined, provisional figure), earning it a place at the top of the competitor rankings. Efficiency-enhancing measures include the familiar AMG-exclusive, friction-optimised twin-wire-arc-sprayed coating on the cylinder walls as well as the on-demand, map-optimised oil supply and intelligent generator management: during the engine’s overrun phases and braking, kinetic energy is used to charge the battery, rather than being wasted by simply generating heat. This recuperation assists the driver not only during braking action but also helps convert the braking energy into electrical energy. Conversely, the generator is switched to no-load operation during acceleration, thus reducing the load on the engine.

Dual-clutch transmission with transaxle configuration and torque tube

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine delivers its abundant power via an ultra-light carbon-fibre driveshaft at the rear axle – similar to the set-up used on the DTM C-Class racing touring car. The dual-clutch transmission is mounted at the rear (transaxle principle) and is connected to the engine housing via a torque tube. A carbon-fibre shaft rotates at engine speed in the torque tube. The advantages of this sophisticated solution are associated with the rigid link between the engine and trans-mission and, in turn, the optimum support for the forces and torque generated.

A new AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission takes care of power transfer. The dual-clutch transmission boasts fast gear changes with no loss of tractive force – in as little as 100 milliseconds. The driver has a choice of four different driving modes: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) or “M” (Manual) along with a RACESTART function. In the Sport, Sport plus and Manual modes the automatic double-declutching function is active; all the modes can be selected conveniently via the rotary control in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Optimum traction comes courtesy of the mechanical differential lock, which is integrated in the compact transmission casing.
Sophisticated suspension layout with double-wishbone axles

The chosen solution with a front-mid engine plus transaxle configuration ensures an ideal front/rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 percent. Mounting the engine behind the front axle has created the ideal conditions for consummate driving dynamics with precise steering, first-class agility, low inertia with spontaneous directional changes and outstanding traction. The commitment of Mercedes-Benz and AMG to building an alluring super sports car that combines consummate racetrack performance with hallmark Mercedes long-distance comfort has given rise to an ingenious suspension layout. All four wheels are located on double wishbones with a track rod, a technology that has proven itself in motor racing, right through to Formula 1. With a double-wishbone axle, the wheel location and suspension function remain separate; the spring/damper struts are supported on the lower wishbone. The double-wishbone concept with its high camber and track rigidity positively locates the wheel with minimal elastic movements, providing the driver with an optimum sense of road contact when driving at the limits.

Wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers at the front and rear are made entirely from forged aluminium – substantially reducing the unsprung masses; this configuration also notably improves the suspension response. The long wheelbase of 2680 millimetres not only results in outstanding straight-line stability but also low wheel load shifts, significantly reducing the vehicle’s tendency to dive and squat. The broad track width – front 1682, rear 1653 millimetres – ensures lower shifts in the wheel loads from the inner to the outer wheel when cornering, enabling the tyres to retain more grip. The large caster angle of 11.5 degrees significantly increases negative wheel camber when cornering and also improves tyre grip – this also ensures outstanding stability when braking heavily while cornering.
Direct steering, differential lock and 3-stage ESP®

The rack-and-pinion steering gear provides a consistently direct steering feel with a constant mechanical ratio of 13.6:1, in tune with the high expectations placed on a super sports car. The power steering provides speed-sensitive assistance and improves the feedback for the driver as the road speed increases: an indispensable factor for high-speed straight-line driving. Mounting the steering gear in front of the engine on the integral subframe enables the engine to be set down very low. The ’Gullwing’ comes with 3-stage ESP® as standard, providing the driver with access to the three “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT” and “ESP OFF” modes at the push of a button. The result is even more driving pleasure without compromising active safety at all. In “ESP OFF” mode too, operating the brake pedal restores all the normal ESP® functions.

The system’s traction logic of the acceleration skid control system (ASR) is active in all three ESP®modes. If one of the drive wheels starts to spin, specific brake pressure is applied to improve traction notably – especially in conjunction with the standard-fit mechanical multi-disc limited-slip differential. This means that the engine power is transferred to the road even more effectively when driving in a particularly dynamic style.
Ceramic composite brakes, innovative flow-forming wheels

The AMGhigh-performance braking system with composite brake discs at the front ensures extremely short stopping distances even under enormous loads. The newly developed, optional ceramic composite brakes with larger brake discs guarantee even better brake performance. The ceramic brake discs will perform reliably at even higher operating temperatures thanks to their greater hardness, all combined with an impressive weight reduction of around 40 percent. Reducing the unsprung masses has further optimised the handling of the ’Gullwing’ – which pays dividends particularly when tackling fast bends on motorways.

Lightweight construction was also key when it came to the wheels: weight-optimised AMG light-alloy wheels – 9.5 x 19 inch (front) and 11.0 x 20 inch (rear) – based on the innovative flow-forming principle reduce the unsprung masses while increasing driving dynamics and suspension comfort. In addition to the standard-fit AMG 7-spoke light-alloy wheels, 5-twin-spoke wheels and 10-spoke forged wheels are available as an option. 265/35 R 19 (front) and 295/30 R 20 (rear) tyres developed exclusively for the SLS AMG ensure optimum performance. A tyre pressure monitoring system is fitted as standard to permanently monitor tyre pressure in all four wheels; individual tyres are shown on the display.

The reinterpretation of the legendary ’Gullwing’ is scheduled to be launched in spring 2010. The sales price is EUR 177,310 (incl. 19% VAT).

The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing is the result of Mclaren and Mercedes parting ways and as a result Mercedes AMG will exclusively engineer their own supercar. The Mclaren SLR, SLR Roadster and Mclaren SLR Stirling Moss will be the last road going car that the two brands will co-engineer, ending their epic journey of development. Mclaren is now busy making their replacement for the Mclaren F1, Mercedes is almost ready to debut their new SLS AMG Gullwing!

The car is the first model to be completely engineered top to bottom at AMG, Mercedes Benz in-house tuners. AMG’s history stretches well over 40 years in this field and are one of the finest tuners in the business. These sketches were released by Mercedes Benz and they just remind us of the classic lines of the 300 SL and 300 SLR from 1950’s, the cars which have provided the SLS all the inspiration. The party piece however, is the magnificent Gullwing doors!

“Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exhilarating super sports car in the guise of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which is bound to set the pulses of all car enthusiasts racing that extra bit faster. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is emotion pure and simple for the Mercedes-Benz brand and is set to become one of the most alluring sports cars of our era”, says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The sketches are very stylistic and show a slightly exaggerated version of the SLS. Expect the actual model to be very close. The entire vehicle is made from an Aluminium spaceframe, a first for AMG Mercedes who were used to Steel chassis. This coupled with super rigid setup, front-mid engined setup and a 1,620 kg curb weight will definitely contribute to razor sharp driving dynamics.

Power is provided by the familiar 6.3L AMG V-8 (normally aspirated) and makes 571bhp (420kW) @ 6800 rpm with a maximum torque of 650Nm @ 4750rpm. Although this may sound modest, the light weight gives it a 0-100km/h time of just 3.8 seconds. Unlike normal Mercedes Benz which are electronically speed limited to 155 mph, this will keep going all the way to a top speed of 315 km/h (197 mph).

It will also use Mercedes new 7-speed double clutch transaxle transmission that uses a DTM (Deutsche Touring Meisterschaft) style torque tube and carbon fiber drive shaft. Optimum traction comes courtesy of the mechanical differential lock, which is integrated in the compact transmission casing. The dry sump and the transaxle give it a low center of gravity and near perfect 48:52 weight distribution. You can enjoy all these features by feasting your eyes on the special pictures that we have in store for you.

“Our customers will experience with the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG the expertise of our sports car manufacturer Mercedes-AMG, built up over 40 years of motor racing, along with the kind of scintillating design that only a top athlete from the Mercedes-Benz stable can offer”, says Volker Mornhinweg, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

AMG high performance carbon ceramic brakes help force the SLS to a stop. They boast 40% weight reduction due to lighter components and hence lower unsprung mass. Light weight 19-inch high performance AMG rims are used that reduce weight even further.

The interior shots have been revealed and the SLS has all the creature comforts that one would look for in a supercar. Those carbon fiber inserts on the dash and the panels further the racing touch. The dials are superbly designed and the Mercedes COMAND system knob is visible as well and the integration of the LCD screen in the dash makes it smooth and flowing.

Thanks to sophisticated catalytic converter technology, the SLS surpasses future emission standards such as EU 5, LEV 2 and ULEV to be met. The SLS AMG consumes around 13 litres of Super Plus per 100 km (NEDC combined, provisional figure). With the final phase of testing underway, the car is expected to debut in 2010.

The Mercedes Benz S-Class is one car that needs no tuning, yet German firm Relux have done just that. They have gone ahead and further modified a $100,000 Mercedes S-Class. They are lesser knows at these parts of the world because their popularity lies with people in the middle-east. So lets see what they have done to the S. (Yet again, Anthony photographed this Relux Mercedes Benz S Class at the 2008 Essen Motorshow back in December)

The front gets a makeover in the form of a new bumper that now features integrated LED daytime running lights. It also gets a new front spoiler. at the back, the luxury limo gets quad trapezoidal tailpipes which are slightly offset on either side of a massive diffuser. Huge 20-inch wheels finished in black provide further drama. Also present are tinted windows, new side skirts and brake light clusters.

With the exteriors done, the Relux has moved to the interiors which is finished in delightful black and cream leather. The engine receives some special attention with a cuztom exhaust system, an uprated ECU and upgraded turbochargers.

So what do we think? Its a good attempt by the firm bu we would rather take the fully loaded S-Class by AMG instead.

Coming across this tuned Mercedes Benz SLK 55 AMG (The Vath V58K) was quite a pleasure considering it is was built by a company called VATH. I had no idea that this company even existed, but I am DAMN happy that I now have them on my radar. Many apologies to VATH for my lack of knowledge about their tuning house, however I would like to make it very clear that I LOVE their work! The body Kit on this car is clean and stealthy, not even close to being over done, a semi perfect medium between too much and this equates this as badass!!!

Engine mods include a jump from 360 bhp to 570 BHP with a staggering 770 NM of torque all stemming from a 5.4L Supercharged V8. The 155mph (249km/h) limiter has been removed and VATH states that their modified SLK 55 AMG will now deliver speed in excess of 186mph (300km/h) as well as reaching 62mph (100km/h) just short of 4 seconds!! The interior, like most highly modified exotics has been replaced with a tonne of ultra sexy carbon fiber. It looks pretty freaking amazing if you ask me!!! The price tag has no yet been set on this mean machine but if you need to ask then you definitely are NOT one that can afford this baby!!! Keep dreaming

PRESS RELEASE

Lake Park, FL – 15JAN2009 – RENNTECH 777 20th Anniversary, or: Horsepower Wars really Really REALLY Not Over

Earlier this week, AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg announced that “the horsepower war is over.” If this sounds familiar, it’s because AMG issued a similar press release LAST JANUARY.

“Last year, it was a coincidence that we were releasing a new, 695 hp performance package for the 65 series AMG cars at around the same time. We sent out a press release that said ‘HP War Not Over’,” recalls Hartmut Feyhl, president of RENNTECH and four-star General of the horsepower wars. “This year it is the same timing again, and we have something much more extreme to announce for our 20th Anniversary.”

Feyhl founded RENNTECH in 1989, and the company has since established itself as one of the world’s premier tuning firms and the foremost authority on Mercedes-Benz performance tuning. 2009 marks the company’s 20th year in business, and the company intends to celebrate by releasing a small number of extreme, limited edition performance vehicles, beginning with the 777 hp, RENNTECH 777 shown here.

“This 777 concept is really an all-new car that makes use of the advanced carbon fiber chassis of the SLR McLaren. It can be described as a street-legal track car, or something closer to what the enthusiasts were hoping for from the SLR, originally – which is more a successor to the McLaren F1.”

RENNTECH heavily revised the SLR McLaren bodywork and aero package using some of the same technology the company used to develop the the GLK Hybrid Rally Racer for Mercedes-Benz, including advanced CFD software to develop the aerodynamics for improved downforce. Even with the big wing, splitters, and skirts, a top speed in excess of 210 mph is well within reach for the 777.

The 777 is much more than lightweight bodywork, however. The 5.5 L supercharged “Kompressor” v8 engine is heavily revised, with internal and external performance upgrades and a significantly upgraded cooling system.

Getting that power to the ground is the job of a fully redesigned suspension and driveline, with a heavily reinforced transmission sending power to RENNTECH’s revolutionary new limited-slip differential. Built for RENNTECH by Japanese supplier OS Giken, the recently-released differential allows for 100% locking between the drive wheels for unsurpassed mid-corner traction. Aggressive Nitto NT-05 ultra-high performance tires wrapped around extremely lightweight, 1 pc. center-locking wheels round out the street -legal handling package.

“The 777 will be a very special car,” explains Hartmut. “The first example is being built now, and will be ready this Spring. We intend to build a few different extreme vehicles like this for our 20th anniversary, with each one being strictly limited to 20 units. They are all very exciting projects, and we will be announcing them throughout the year, as they approach completion.”

Contact RENNTECH for information and RENNTECH 777 SLR McLaren package pricing.

Crashing this machine would certainly mean a quick end to your life, yet what a way to go. Of course the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss will be a limited production car, just under 100 will be made, 75 to be exact. Retail on it will be around 750,000 Euros which touches 1.070.000 million USD.

—————— PRESS RELEASE ——————

Stuttgart– Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are adding the crowning glory to the model family of their highly successful SLR super sports car with a new, uncompromisingly spectacular car. There is neither a roof nor a windscreen to separate the driver and passenger from the outside world; they enjoy unadulterated high-speed excitement with all the attributes of a speedster.

The new SLR Stirling Moss is also characterised by the most sophisticated technology and a breathtaking design which reinterprets the SLR legend. With 478 kW/650 hp the SLR Stirling Moss accelerates its V8 supercharged engine from standstill to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 350 km/h – no other series-production car is at the same time so open and so fast. This extreme concept makes the new high-performance sports car a legitimate bearer of the name of the British motor racing legend and Mille Miglia record-holder Stirling Moss, who drove the legendary Mercedes-Benz SLR racing cars from victory to victory during the 1950s.

The exclusive SLR Stirling Moss rounds off the current SLR family and is limited to 75 units. It is priced at 750,000 euros. The SLR Roadster will cease to be manufactured at the end of May 2009 as planned, and production of the SLR Stirling Moss will commence in June 2009.

Three letters are all it takes to make car fans’ hearts beat faster: SLR. In the 1950s the Mercedes-Benz SLR 300 celebrated victory after victory. It won the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio as well as the Tourist Trophy. It was driven by the stars of the time: Juan Manual Fangio and Karl Kling – and, first and foremost, by the British racing driver Stirling Moss. At ten hours, seven minutes and 48 seconds he still holds the Mille Miglia record.

This is why the modern-day version of the legendary SLR carries the additional words “Stirling Moss” in its name. As the new SLR Stirling Moss unites the character of the current SLR models with the fascination of the SLR of 1955. The core values of both the historical and the present-day SLR models include an exciting new design, innovative technology, high-class materials displaying perfect craftsmanship, and, above all: a unique driving experience for all the senses.

Whilst the 300 SLR earned its spurs on racing circuits the world over, the new member of the SLR family is not designed for the racetrack. Although it sets new standards in terms of technology, performance and excitement – just like its forebears – it is aimed at individuals who have exquisite requirements and nurture very special dreams.

Highly puristic concept without a roof or a windscreen

Remaining totally true to the specifications of the 300 SLR, the new Silver Arrow’s equipment is extremely sophisticated and yet at the same time decidedly spartan, doing without both a roof and side windows. There are just two wind deflectors a couple of centimetres in height to protect the driver and passenger from the airflow. Two air scoops integrated into the bodywork serve as roll-over bars. With this extreme concept the new SLR Stirling Moss is visually very different from all the other vehicles which belong to the elite sports car class.

Just like the legendary racing vehicles of yesteryear, the SLR Stirling Moss dazzles with its superlative performance. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and with a top speed of 350 km/h this puristic high-performance sports car denotes completely new dimensions in open-top driving. And not just because of the impressive performance figures; every time drivers take to the wheel of the SLR Stirling Moss their senses are addressed with a previously unheard of intensity, conveying a driving experience in its purest and most sensual form. This automotive thoroughbred thus facilitates the kind of open-air feeling that is utterly unique for a road-going vehicle.

Exciting design reminiscent of the SLR racing cars

The SLR Stirling Moss, its entire bodywork made of fine lightweight carbon fibre, represents a stand-alone design concept. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz designers were working on the body of the new SLR Stirling Moss, they were fully aware every single moment that they were creating a vehicle with a top speed of 350 km/h. At the same time this supreme athlete is highly reminiscent of the SLR racing cars from the 1950s, whose design idiom still never fails to impress to this day.

The SLR Stirling Moss sports an exciting, pronounced arrow-shaped form and is characterised by an elongated bonnet and a compact, muscular rear. As there is no windscreen, the exterior and interior flow smoothly into one. The bonnet also stretches from its striking tip right down into the interior, giving the vehicle body a distinctly sleek air. Even when standing still, the sports car radiates such dynamism that the observer immediately falls under its spell.

Further eye-catching features include two air scoops behind the driver and passenger. They carry additional roll-over bars, also uniting the traditional and the modern. The wings are powerfully contoured. Black-painted ventilation “gills” sitting facet-like on the sides and on the bonnet also cite the legend. A thrilling interplay of light and shadow ensues through the expressive lines, underlining the dynamic overall impression. Exactly as they were on the shining historical example, the side skirts on the new SLR Stirling Moss are also very high. This prompted the designers’ decision in favour of folding swing-wing doors which open forwards.

The vehicle can be closed by two tonneau covers which are carried in the boot. When both tonneau covers and the doors are closed the SLR Stirling Moss resembles a sculpture.

In keeping with the puristic exterior of the vehicle, the interior is also reduced to the bare essentials. Surfaces penetrating each other in the instrument panel and doors make for an exciting atmosphere and resonate perfectionism. A mixture of high-class authentic materials such as carbon fibre, aluminium and fine-quality leather sets the style here. An aluminium plate carries the engraved signature of Stirling Moss and covers the area around the shift lever.

Innovative technology and polished aerodynamic concept

Developers working on the Stirling Moss were able to fall back on a wealth of experience gathered when producing the SLR Coupé and Roadster, in particular where the technical base was concerned, with its extravagant carbon-fibre design, high-performance suspension and throaty V8 engine. The common denominator uniting the Stirling Moss with the other members of the SLR family is the aerodynamic concept with a closed underbody and a diffuser in the rear bumper for maximum possible downforce at the rear axle – with one difference: the diffuser here is considerably larger than that on the coupé and roadster.

Thanks to the high-precision work carried out in the wind tunnel, the SLR Stirling Moss always generates sufficient downforce for extremely safe handling. But the driver can also manually operate the AIRBRAKE in order to increase the contact pressure further, during particularly sporty driving, for example. The AIRBRAKE is also raised during powerful braking at speeds above 120 km/h, so as to stabilise the vehicle even more in such situations, thus facilitating maximum possible deceleration.

Limited to 75 units – the SLR models’ crowning glory

The new SLR Stirling Moss is the kind of high-calibre speedster coveted by the sporting gentry and enthusiasts alike. At the same time it is a collector’s item which marks the pinnacle of an era and, for the foreseeable future, at least, the final curtain for the SLR. In May 2009 production of the SLR models will cease; only a total of 75 units of the Stirling Moss will be manufactured between June and December 2009, bearing chassis numbers from 1 to 75. Not only does this exclusive vehicle represent the conclusion of the current SLR family; it also serves as a very special thank you to the most loyal of SLR customers, for they are the only ones able to acquire a Stirling Moss.

With the double-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 under the hood, pumping out 661 HP and 738 ft-lb torque with an electronic limited top speed of 320km/h!!!. Priced in the range of $320,000, the SL65 AMG Black Series is an indirect replacement for the McLaren SLR coupe.

It has a 5 speed automatic (wtf not a 6?) gearbox with four drive programs: C, S, M1 and M2. AMG claims the M2 setting has a response time 20% quicker than M1.

Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series

Exclusive high-performance coupé for especially discerning customers

A spectacular look, unique performance data, consistently lightweight design and the highest degree of exclusivity – these attributes sum up the new 65 AMG Black Series from Mercedes-Benz. The high-performance coupé features pure-bred motor sports technology, and introduces sports car fans to a whole new world in terms of dynamic performance. The AMG 6.0-l V12 biturbo engine, developing a maximum output of 493 kW/670 hp and maximum torque of 1,000 newton metres, guarantees the dynamic performance of a super sports car.

This high-performance two-seater was developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO by the same experts who were responsible for designing the Official F1TM Safety Car and Official F1TM Medical Car. The SL 65 AMG Black Series is a continuation of the successful Black Series strategy from Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance brand from Mercedes-Benz Cars. As the new AMG top model, the SL 65 AMG Black Series outstrips the other AMG SL models:
both the SL 63 AMG with its 386-kW / 525-hp AMG 6.3-l V8 engine and the SL 65 AMG, powered by an AMG 6.0-l V12 biturbo engine, developing 450 kW/612 hp.

Wide, solid and low – that is the new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series. The dynamic coupé inspires passion even when it is stationary. The distinctive wide mudguards, extendable spoiler and rear apron with diffuser fins are an unmistakable demonstration of the transfer from the motor sports world that has been part of the company philosophy at Mercedes AMG for over 40 years. In its appearance, the SL 65 AMG Black Series is reminiscent of the successful AMG racing cars, such as the DTM C-Class.

Large cooling air vents in the front apron and bonnet give a clear indication of the enormous power of the AMG biturbocharged twelve-cylinder engine. From 5,980 cc, the AMG V12 develops a maximum output of 493 kW / 670 hp at 5,400 rpm, and an electronically limited torque of 1,000 newton metres at between 2,200 and 4,200 rpm. Without limits, the AMG 6.0-l V12 biturbo engine, handmade at the AMG engine plant in accordance with the traditional philosophy “one man – one engine”, would develop a maximum torque of 1,200 newton metres.

Compared with the basic power train of the SL 65 AMG, which develops 450 kW / 612 hp, the turbochargers on the twelve-cylinder engine of the SL 65 AMG Black Series have been redesigned. The spiral cross-section of the turbocharger, which is twelve percent larger, together with the optimised wastegate ducts enable a higher airflow rate and even more impressive power development in all speed ranges. The modified intake air duct produces an even more spontaneous vehicle response. Redesigned mufflers in the AMG sports exhaust system reduce exhaust back pressure and help boost performance. And there is an acoustic side effect: a typically evocative AMG harmony is created by the distinctive twelve-cylinder sound that escapes from the two trapezoidal exhaust pipe ends.

The low-temperature charge air coolers are about 30 percent more effective, enabling not only a maximum power output under highly dynamic driving conditions, but also the greatest possible stability in high external temperatures. This is also assisted by the optimised water cooling system with a repositioned radiator, high-performance aspirator and large vents in the bonnet.

Attractive power/weight ratio delivers superb performance

The extraordinary engine specifications which make the SL 65 AMG Black Series the most powerful AMG model so far enable it to deliver superb performance values. It can reach a speed of 100 km/h from a standing start in just 3.8 seconds, and takes 11.0 seconds to reach 200 km/h. The top speed is 320 km/h (electronically limited).

Also responsible for the high dynamic performance is the attractive power/weight ratio of just 2.79 kg/hp – a result of the comparably low curb weight of 1870 kg, which complies with the EU standard. This makes the SL 65 AMG Black Series 250 kg lighter than the SL 65 AMG – a significant weight reduction derived from specific lightweight design measures. A large number of bodywork components are made from high-strength and especially lightweight carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), a technology which has proved its value in motor sports. The front mudguards, which are 14 cm wider, the front apron with the visible carbon fibre front splitter, the bonnet and the boot lid are all made from CFRP. The “V12 biturbo” lettering on the front mudguards give an indication of the engine’s potency.

New CFRP roof with integrated roll bar

The roof cladding, made completely from CFRP, is presented in an all-new design. Not only does it feature an integrated roll bar, but by foregoing the Vario roof typical for SL-Class vehicles, the roofline has been made considerably flatter. This is obvious from the rear window, which is at a flatter angle to the boot lid. The CFRP spoiler incorporated in the boot lid automatically extends by 12 cm from a speed of 120 km/h, increasing the rear axle power take-off at 200 km/h by 50 kg. Viewed from behind, the rear apron with its visible carbon fibre diffuser insert is conspicuous: this incorporates the active cooling system for the rear axle limited slip differential. New, optimum-weight AMG forged wheels with a double spoke design -19″ at the front, 20″ at the back – sit impressively in the wheel housings. With the black paintwork, the high-sheen surfaces and matt finish lend an opulent look to the side profile.

Power transmission with four drive programmes and double clutch function

In keeping with its outstanding potential and high dynamic performance, the power development and chassis of the SL 65 AMG Black Series are also presented at their best. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS five-speed automatic gearbox. There are four drive programmes to choose from: “C”, “S” and “M1″, as well as “M2″, which has a 20-percent quicker response time than “M1″. Both manual programmes, “M1″ and “M2″, allow the driver to benefit from the extreme tractive power of the V12 biturbo engine, since the gears will not automatically change down, even on full throttle; the AMG SPEED-SHIFT PLUS five-speed automatic gearbox stays reliably in the selected gear, even during kick-down shifts. In addition, a power train which is extremely direct in all driving conditions supports the torque converter bypass coupling from first gear onwards. The automatic double clutch function provides an extra thrill when changing down, as well as reducing the load alteration effects – which has an exceedingly positive effect, especially when braking to corner on the race circuit, and also improves driving safety in wet and icy conditions.

In keeping with this vehicle’s tremendous power and torque, the power train features especially high-performance components: not only the various gearbox components, such as the clutch discs and switching and converter bypass logic, but also the drive shafts, wheel carriers and bearings, and also the spring links on the rear axle, are made to an extremely resilient design.

Completely new design for AMG coil-over sports suspension

When it comes to the chassis, the AMG experts have put their faith in a new design. The AMG sports chassis has been designed with coil-over suspension – this solution, which has been proven in the realm of motor sports, makes it possible to adjust the pressure and flow rates of the shock absorbers and vehicle level, as well as the track and camber. Drivers can configure their own personal suspension setup, especially for use on the race circuit. Both axles feature newly developed spring links and thrust, camber and tension rods, as well as optimum weight aluminium wheel carriers. Compared with the series production SL 65 AMG, the Black Series has 115 mm more track width on the front axle, and 103 mm more on the rear axle. The new front axle kinematics creates a steering ratio which is eight percent more direct, and the completely revised elasto-kinematics ensures greater steering precision. The result: light-footed, predictable handling.

3-stage ESPÃ’ provides distinctive driving dynamics

3-stage ESPÃ’ with sports function is synonymous with the greatest possible driving pleasure and distinctive driving dynamics: the driver can use the ESPÃ’ button on the centre console to switch between “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT” and “ESP OFF” – the selected mode is displayed on the central screen of the AMG instrument panel. In “ESP ON” mode, in the advent of unstable driving conditions, brakes are automatically applied to one or more wheels, and the engine torque is reduced.

Briefly pressing the ESPÃ’ button activates the “ESP SPORT” function. In this mode, automatic oversteer and understeer control as well as the accompanying engine torque adjustment allow for more dynamic driving conditions, more or less corresponding to the drift angle – which clearly means a lot more driving enjoyment for SL 65 AMG Black Series drivers. Depressing the brake pedal fully reactivates ESPÃ’.

Holding down the ESPÃ’ button activates the “ESP OFF” function. This means there are no more automatic adjustments to the driving dynamics, and in general the engine torque will no longer be reduced – for even more driving excitement. “ESP OFF” should be used only by experienced drivers on closed-off race circuits. Even in this mode, it is still possible to reactivate all of the ESPÃ’ functions by depressing the brake pedal. Traction logic is active in all three ESPÃ’ modes. If a drive wheel starts to spin, specific automatic brake control is used to improve traction. Working together with the multiple-disc limited-slip differential, which has over 40 percent of its barrier effect in deceleration, this ensures that the enormous power of the engine is transferred to the road surface with minimum loss.

Sports tires and compound disc brakes for top performance

The selected wheel/tyre combination is responsible for ensuring the best possible performance of the SL 65 AMG Black Series on the race circuit: on the front axle, 265/35 R 19 tyres are fitted onto 9.5″ AMG light alloy wheels. On the rear axle, the impressive format is AMG 11.5 x 20 light alloy wheels with 325/30 R 20 tyres. The Sport Maxx GT tyres are supplied by DTM Motor Sports partner Dunlop; they provide especially good grip and amazing coornering speeds. Peering through the filigree double spokes on the AMG light alloy wheels will reveal the generously dimensioned AMG high-performance brake system. Vented, perforated disc brakes featuring especially high-performance compound technology are fitted all round. On the front axle, the deceleration load is borne by 6-piston fixed callipers and 390 x 36 mm brake discs, with 4-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 26 mm discs on the rear axle.

Functional yet charming interior design

Nappa leather, alcantara and carbon – the interior of the SL 65 AMG Black Series creates the perfect ambience to get sports car enthusiasts’ hearts racing. The all-black interior exudes the functional atmosphere of a genuine racing car, while at the same time captivating with its charming details.

Newly developed AMG bucket seats in CFRP (ECE version only) provide occupants with perfect lateral support when cornering at speed. The seats without side airbags are covered with fine, black nappa leather and charcoal alcantara, and feature the distinctive AMG logo on the headrests. Fifteen mm smaller in diameter and with a perforated lateral grip area, the AMG high-performance steering wheel, with its flattened underside, provides optimum vehicle control. Silver-coloured aluminium switch paddles enable manual gear changing.

More highlights featured on the centre console are the premium quality carbon body trim, the matt-lustrous start/stop button, the new AMG gear stick with carbon insert and the AMG logo with the words “Black Series” on the ashtray. To match these, there are carbon centre panels on the door with the AMG logo, and the roof lining and A and C columns are in charcoal alcantara. The AMG instrument panel has a completely new design: the black speedometer indicates up to 360 km/h and has been completely redesigned, as has the white rev counter with its four integrated LEDs, which indicate to the driver the optimum moment to change gear. When the ignition is switched on, the speedometer and rev counter needles move in synch to the end of their ranges then return simultaneously to their resting positions, giving the driver a clear signal to start the engine.

The AMG main menu displays more than just the selected drive programme. The driver can also view the selected ESPÃ’ mode, the engine oil temperature and the battery voltage. The integrated “RACETIMER” stores information on the race cicuit lap times.

Further standard equipment for the SL 65 AMG Black Series includes the COMAND APS. The new multimedia device with a 6.5″-colour screen combines a car radio with double tuner, telephone, CD-/DVD changer, Bluetooth interface, drive for SD memory cards and a Europe-wide navigation system. The 40-GB hard drive ensures extra fast route calculation. An iPod, USB stick or other external audio devices can be plugged into into the COMAND system via the media interface.

Complex development process in all of the Earth’s climate zones

The complex development and testing process for the SL 65 AMG Black Series began in 2006. The AMG engineers and technicians test-drove ten prototypes and development vehicles in all of the Earth’s climate zones. Whether this involved fast laps of the Nürburgring racetrack, high-speed test drives in Nardo, Italy, wind tunnel tests, extensive test drives in the summer heat and arctic cold or real-life crash tests – the new AMG high-performance Coupé had to prove that it was up to series production standard in every regard. In total, the SL 65 AMG Black Series notched up around 30,000 test kilometres on various circuits – 15,000 km of which were on the northern loop of the Nürburgring racetrack, acknowledged as the most difficult race circuit in the world.

Just like the SLK 55 AMG Black Series and the CLK 63 AMG Black Series, the SL 65 AMG Black Series was developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO, opened in 2006. The sale price is 327,250 euros (incl. 19% VAT), and the first models will be delivered to customers in November 2008. For more information on the SL 65 AMG Black Series, visit the Mercedes AMG Website: www.mercedes-amg.com

SL 63 AMG: high-performance roadster with AMG MCT sports transmission

Besides the SL 65 AMG Black Series, there are two more SL models from AMG to choose from: the SL 63 AMG and the SL 65 AMG. Both high-performance roadsters, launched in March 2008, offer extraordinary driving dynamics, a stand-alone design and exclusive fittings. The SL 63 AMG stands for passionate performance rendered by a technological tour de force: powered by an AMG 6.3-l V8 engine, developing 386 kW / 525 hp and 630 newton metres, it is currently the highest performing model with a naturally aspirated V8 engine in its class.

The innovative AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission is completely new, and exclusive to the SL 63 AMG. Instead of the traditional torque converter, the newly developed power transmission system uses a compact, wet starting clutch. The resulting direct connection with the drive train, combined with the double clutch and RACE START functions, provide for an exciting and highly dynamic driving experience. With this extraordinary power train combination and with the new, fine-tuned, more agile AMG sports suspension on an Active Body Control basis, the SL 63 AMG is setting new standards in the open sports car segment.

The SL 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and has a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). With a displacement of 6,208 cc, the high-torque induction engine develops 386 kW / 525 hp at 6,800 rpm, and has a maximum torque of 630 newton metres at 5,200 rpm. The combination of the high-torque design and large engine displacement brings together the best of both worlds: high tractive power at low speeds and exciting high speeds of up to 7,200 rpm.

SL 65 AMG with the superior AMG V12 biturbo engine

The SL 65 AMG is top of the range in the exclusive twelve-cylinder roadster segment. Its AMG 6.0-l V12 biturbo engine develops 450 kW/612 hp and a maximum torque of 1000 newton metres – a performance which is unrivalled, even four years after its launch on the market. Impressive proof of the AMG twelve-cylinder engine’s extraordinary power is given by its accelerating power, reaching 100 km/h from standstill in 4.2 seconds; its top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

These exclusive drive train dynamics are made possible by the V12 power train with 5,980 cc developed by Mercedes AMG: its maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp is always achievable between 4,800 and 5,100 rpm, while the electronically limited maximum torque of 1,000 Newton metres can be reached between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. The AMG V12 biturbo engine develops a torque of 570 newton metres at the crankshaft at just 1,000 rpm, and 1,500 rpm takes it to 750 newton metres. As with the SL 63 AMG, the AMG sports suspension on an Active Body Control basis in the SL 65 AMG has been even further refined.
